NSE: Market capitalisation swings to N11.99bn

Trading in the nation’s equity market trended upwards last week with value of investments appreciating by N140 billion .Market capitalization of listed equities appreciated by 1.19 per cent to N11.989 trillion from N11.849 trillion reported the previous week.

The NSE All Share Index closed in a positive trend, increasing by 384.71 basis points to 42841.69 points from 32456.98 traded the preceding week.

Similarly, all other indices finished higher with the exception of the NSE-Main Board Index, NSE Consumer Goods index, NSE Oil/Gas Index, NSE Industrial Goods Index and NSE Pension Index that closed lower by 0.57 per cent , 0.63 per cent, 0.87 per cent, 0.55 per cent and 0.59 per cent respectively.

NSE Corporate Governance index increased by 8.44 to 1,302.98 points NSE Premium index added 74.62 to 3403.05, NSE ASeM index grew by 4.65 to 792.33, NSE 30 Index 12.37 to 1,474.26, NSE Banking Index went up by 4.27 to 416.20, NSE Insurance index advanced by 2.40 basis points to 124.29, NSE Lotus II climbed by 15.71 basis points to 2,264.50 points.

The NSE trading result for the week showed that investors traded a turnover of 1.380 billion shares worth N15.149 billion in 13,478 deals in contrast to a total of 915.856 million shares valued at N9.835 billion that exchanged hands previous week in 14,033 deals.
The Financial Services Industry led the activity chart with 1.237 billion shares valued at N9.725 billion traded in 7,404 deals, contributing 89.62 per cent and 64.19 per cent to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively. The Consumer Goods Industry followed with 62.505 million shares worth N1.689 billion in 2,560 deals.The third place was Oil and Gas Industry with a turnover of 26.341 million shares worth 2.447 billion in 1,213 deals.

Trading in the top three equities namely – Sunu Assurances Nigeria Plc, Zenith Bank Plc and Guaranty Trust Bank Plc, accounted for 772.902 million shares worth N7.841 billion in 2,050 deals, representing 55.99 per cent and 51.76 per cent to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively.

A review of the trading activities for the week showed that 20 equities appreciated in price during the week against 29 recorded the previous week. The result further indicated that 42 quoted companies depreciated in price, compared with 40 reported in the preceding week, while 107 equities remained unchanged higher than 100 equities recorded in the preceding week.

An analysis of the trading activities during the week showed that Prestige Assurance Plc led gainers table for the week,gaining 12.00 per cent or N0.06 kobo to close at N0.56 kobo, Axamansard Insurance Plc followed with a gain of 10.00 per cent or N0.18 kobo to close at N1.98 kobo while the Initiates Plc appreciated by 8.93 per cent or N0.05 kobo to close at N0.61 kobo. Other companies appreciated in price Continental Reinsurance Plc 6.67 per cent, Africa Prudential Plc 5.00 per cent, Dangote Cement Plc5.00, Access Bank Plc 3.75 per cent, Champion Breweries Plc 3.70, Cadbury Nigeria Plc 3.16 per cent, Zenith Bank Plc 3.15 per cent.

On the contrary, Cutix Plc topped losers chart, dropping by 42.82 per cent or N1.67 kobo to close at N2.23 kobo, Niger Insurance Plc trailed with a loss of N15.15 per cent or N0.05 kobo to close at N0.28 kobo. Universal Insurance Plc down by 13.04 per cent or N0.03 kobo to close at N0.020 kobo. Other companies depreciated in price were Japaul Oil and Maritime Services Plc 12.50 per cent, Sovereign Trust Insurance Plc 12.50 per cent, Pharma Demo Plc 11.58, Beta Glass Plc 10.00, Fidson Healthcare Plc 10.00, Julius Beger Nigeria Plc 9.83 per cent and C & I Leasing Plc 9.67 per cent.

There was no trade recorded for Exchange Traded Products (ETPs) during the week under review. However,a total of 3,523 units valued at N52,561.80 were transacted last week in 3 deals.A total of 40,720 units of Federal Government Bonds valued at N42.580 million were traded this week in 26 deals compared with a total of 8,619 units valued at at N8.300 million transacted last week in 16 deals.
